Frequently Asked Questions
I have found a lizard, how do I identify it and submit the sighting record to DOC?
Currently there is no up-to-date key on our lizards, but the NZ Lizards Database has lots of very good photographs. You can browse through the Region list of the database, and see if any of the photos are similar to your animal. You can also contact us with a photograph by going here, and we can assist you in identification. In entering the form on this page, you can also submit a record to DOC, via us.
I have an idea for a local project involving lizards or frogs, but do not know where to start or get the funding. Can you help?
Yes, we can help. We often give our advice to community groups for free, and we even write the funding applications for them. In fact, we already do this for several community groups.
I like what you are doing. Can I get involved?
Absolutely. You can assist us as a volunteer. We have started a volunteer register (go to here). Just fill out the form, and we may get in touch if there is a local project in your area that we could use your assistance with.
Where can I find more information on New Zealand's lizards and frogs?
The NZ Lizards Database is the most useful resource on our lizards. For frogs, you can visit NZ Frogs
Is it true that all lizards are legally protected by law?
Yes, that is true with the exception for the rainbow skink (which is an Australian immigrant). All native lizards are protected by the Wildlife Act 1952, and their habitats by the Resource Management Act 1991. Essentially what that means is that you shouldn't really be disturbing, handling or killing lizards nor destroying their habitat, without a Wildlife Permit from the Department of Conservation, and a resource consent from your local council.
I have a project which involves assessment of environmental effects for a resource consent. Can you help?
Yes, we can. We often undertake surveys, develop recommendations and management plans to manage the adverse effects, and provide Evidence for court if required. We often work with large ecological companies in particularly large projects such as windfarms and dams, but we can also work directly with the client if required.
